Attracting the undesired and the unwanted, the dreamers and the schemers, the hopeful and the hopeless, New York City is a land of rebirth, a place for second chances. In the city that never sleeps, anything can happen.

In a small complex in the middle of this hustle and bustle, lives a group of students in one cramped apartment. Rent ain’t cheap in the city, so they are stuck with one another. Some are friends, some are enemies. Others are in love, a few have deep dark secrets they are trying to keep. They also have to deal with unruly neighbors and nosy landlords, all while trying to make it in the NYC. New York is a beautiful city. One that is willing to chew you up and spit you back out. So you better be strong. Because only the cunning survive.

ROLEPLAY IS OFFICIALLY OPEN!

Deep down in a highly protected, highly guarded facility in the city of Washington, D.C., there was a group of scientists that worked for a government group called Global-1. In this facility, the many scientists were working on different kinds of cures for the many different types of cancers and diseases. As they tiredly worked day and night to improve their ‘cures’, these scientists would inject human test subjects who have voluntarily donated themselves to science, hoping their death sentences would get postponed. As Matthew, one of the lead scientists, worked for three days non-stop, he believed he had come up with the perfect concoction to curing diseases. His test subject showed signs of healing and healthiness. His test subject - Subject 10, a male who had been diagnosed with AIDS, was walking around his room with no trouble. Subject 10 was able to work out, learn, and live in such an accelerated rate, it had even surprised the President of the United States of how well Matthew had worked. Because of his findings, the President ordered the rest of the subjects to be injected with his ‘cure’.

There was just one problem. After two weeks of Subject 10 showing fantastic results, things started to turn for the worst. First, Subject 10 became very ill again - this confused the scientists. The rest of the subjects started to show the same symptoms, but they all shared one frightening trait; they all craved human flesh. After the subjects started to attack the scientists, the security guards put the entire place into lock down; at least, they thought they did. But the subjects escaped and reigned their terror through the United States; it would soon change into a Zombie Apocalypse.

The date is now May of 2013; the infection started in October 2012. It has been seven months since the survivors have seen any normality. As they continue to find food, clean water, ammo, and shelter they are still finding more uninfected humans. With everyone trying to live each day without dying, they must also try to hold onto heir humanity.

Now dears, both creating and managing a functioning roleplay requires massive amounts of patience. No matter how long you expect the undertaking to last, it’s a responsibility where you are constantly on the chopping block.

It’s not a mark of inadequacy if administration isn’t for you. This is a point I should stress. There are people out there who might have been able to being people together and create an active environment, but run it into the ground. I’ve seen this happen fast and I’ve seen it happen slow, and it isn’t pretty for anyone involved. In the best case, the admin steps down and is replaced, but the entire situation could have been avoided completely if when creating a roleplay a person took a second look their own character and history.

Rant #002; Using inappropriate words in promoting a roleplay.

I’ve only ever seen this once and I don’t wish to see this again. Apparently the admin of this roleplay thought it would make them look professional to write the p-word in the title box to catch the potential roleplayers’ attention.

This way should never ever ever be used when you want to promote your roleplay. This is inappropriate and makes you look immature as an admin. I understand that you want to catch people’s attention, but no, that’s not the way.

You hear so much about the importance of the “character flaw” or “fatal flaw” but how do you make this aspect of character intrinsic to the story? For starters, the flaws of a character are connected to past trauma and fear, but story-driving character flaws go much deeper. Indiana Jones was afraid of snakes, and while that fear was used for an onscreen laugh and recurring moments throughout the series, his ophidiophobia had nothing to do with driving the storyline of the movies.

Advice for new RPers. And old RPers joining a new RP.

We all know, at least I know, how hard it is sometimes to be in a new RP with no one you know, so I’ve put together a few tips.

Make an OOC introduction post. That is if these are aloud. If they aren’t, then no one else knows each other anyways so you’re not behind. However, if they do, it’s always good to make a quick “OOC: Hi, my name is Dot, I’ve been roleplaying for 200 million years and you all seem awesome.” Or whatever fits your fancy. If people are nice, they’ll respond back and bing-bang-boom, you’re already on a roll.

If allowed gif interactions, respond to as many IC posts as possible. Now if your character is shy, this may be a little bit harder, but even I play a shy character in one of my RPs, and he’s basically talked to half to RP by now, while still remaining in character for him. Responding to IC posts helps your character establish relationships, or get to know already established relationships. Not all characters you respond to will become your best friend, but hey, what have you got to lose?

If you want to plot with someone, talk to them. Maybe it’s just me, but I have a really hard time initiating OOC conversation, because I have a paranoia that they will think I’m annoying. But I just have to suck it up and send them a message asking if they would like to para/plot/etc. Most of the time they are really nice and say yes, I promise you. And if they say no, it’s usually for a good reason, and if it’s not, screw them.

Start to talk to people through messages/in tags. If you’ve started RPing with someone, I always find it good to get to know them through tags or messages. Tell them that you like their character/fc/something, even if you don’t, it makes them like you and more willing to RP with you.

Do not whine about no one liking you/RPing with you. If you do this, it’s most likely that you have followed none of the tips above. You can’t just sit there and wait for someone to come up to you with an amazing plot and want to RP with you. That happens one time out of never. If you whine about it, people will be less likely to want to do anything with you. Do make a post (if aloud) asking if anybody would like to plot, and if no one responds, you message them. You have to do things yourself.

Talk to the new people. If you’ve been in an RP for a while, and nothing big is happening with your character, talk to the new people. They most likely feel the same way you did when you first join, and are more willing to plot with you.

Don’t be an asshole. Don’t.

And if you’re already in an RP with new people coming in, talk to them, because hey, they might even become the best RP partner you’ve ever had.

It’s crucial that you understand your characters; if you don’t know them like the back of your hand, how can your readers hope to? Part of your job is to make them relatable and flawed. (Some types of writing supersede this, such as those which include allegorical figures, but that’s a technicality.) It’s a very natural thing for humans (and other biological beings) to not tell the truth. Sometimes, dishonesty itself can be the crux of a novel. It’s easy to make your character tell a lie, but how easy is it to convince the other characters, or your readers?

This is just a basic run down of physical (body language) gestures and verbal cues that may indicate someone is being untruthful.

How to write a kiss

Oooh! Yes! I love kisses. Kisses are where it all starts ;).

Okay, first, remember that a kiss is much, much more than just lips. It is lips, but also tongues, teeth, eyes, faces, hands, noses, bodies, heartbeats, breath, voice- and most importantly, a kiss is emotions. A kiss without emotion is just wet mushy lips stuck together. Ew. Gross. The most important part of a kiss isn’t the how, but the who- because of the emotions between the two people.

Okay so:

lips- Lips can slide, glide over each other smoothly, or they can be chapped and rough and dry and get stuck on each other. They can match, top-to-top and bottom-to-bottom, or they can overlap, with one person’s top or bottom lip captured between the other person’s lips (yummy). If there is lipstick or chapstick there is lipstick or chapstick flavor, otherwise, lips don’t have a taste (can you taste yours?). Lips also can smack- the sound of two of them coming together or pulling apart, because they’re wet and warm and soft.

tongue- Tongues are always wet, and always warm. They’re very versatile. They can trace over lips, teeth, or another tongue. They can be smooth and graceful or teasing and flicking. When tongues are involved, there is drool. It’s only sexy when you like the person you’re kissing, or else it’s kinda gross. :P

teeth- teeth can clack together awkwardly, or teeth can bite down sensually. A person biting their own lip is cute, a person biting another’s lips is sexy. A person biting gently is sensual, a person biting roughly is sexual.

eyes- Eyes can be wide open with surprise, half-lidded with desire, fully closed with pleasure. Eyes can gaze lovingly, lustfully, wistfully, hungrily, seductively- it all depends upon the emotions of your characters. Have them do whatever you like, but don’t leave them out- give them at least a mention!

faces- Faces are what the lips are attached to. Noses bump, cheeks flush, ears turn red, foreheads either wrinkle or relax. Kisses can leave lips, quite easily, and become kisses on chins, cheeks, noses, foreheads, ears, necks, throats. Kisses on noses or foreheads are cute and adorable, kisses on cheeks are sweet, kisses on chins, ears, and throats are very sexual. And a kiss on the lips can be all of those! <3

hands- Hands are super-important. In order to describe a kiss, usually you want to also describe the hands. Where are they? Does one character have their hand behind the other’s head or back, holding them close? Are they on someone’s shoulders pulling them near, or pushing them away? Fingers brushing someone’s cheek or palms grabbing someone’s ass convey two very different kinds of situations, even if the kiss itself is exactly the same.

noses- Noses are annoying. They easily get in the way, especially for first kisses! People have to tilt their head to one side or the other, and if they don’t, noses bump. I’d only mention noses if a kiss is supposed to be awkward or uncertain or nervous.

bodies- bodies are either close together, or far away. Someone can be surrounded comfortingly by someone’s arms, or terrifyingly trapped by them. Bodies are warm or hot, they are calm or nervous, relaxed or tense. Body language says a lot. Is your character pulling away, or moving closer?

heartbeat- Hearts can beat fast or slow, and that’s about all they can do- but there are lots of reasons why they do! A heart can beat fast with fear or excitement or nervousness; a heart can pound with lust or race with terror or sing with joy. Hearts can glow, cower, or shatter. When you really want to drive the emotions of a character home, mention the heart.

breath- To me, the most consuming part of a kiss is the breath. The air that someone else has just breathed going deep into your lungs is very intimate. Lips and tongues don’t have a taste, but breath does. Each person’s breath tastes different, smells different, and surrounds a person differently than anyone else’s breath. Breath can be warm and sweet, breath can be hot and sexy, breath can be hot and frightening. It is something that is very present and should not be left out. A lot of writers leave breath out. And it’s so important; it’s the most intimate part of a kiss. Someone else is breathing into your lungs, and it’s either heaven or it’s hell.

voice- Voice conveys much, even without words. A voice can groan, whimper, gasp, moan, catch, whine, scream, sigh. Voice can convey emotion powerfully, and while some kisses are silent, usually they’re not.

emotion- Emotion is the most important- and the thing you try not to say. You want to describe it, through all of the things above, so that it’s perfectly clear what your characters are feeling, without you ever using the “feelings words”. If they’re in love, their bodies will lean close, their eyes will smile, their voices will giggle softly. If they’re nervous, their palms will sweat, their noses will bump, their voices will shudder. If they’re afraid, their muscles will be tense, their faces will grimace, their lips will not open. Emotion is the color that you keep inside your mind as you write; it’s the base line that drives the description behind everything else you say.

Wow, that was a lot! Gosh I hope it wasn’t too much! Keep in mind not every kiss has all these things- this is just a list of things to consider when writing a kiss, and based on how long of a kiss you want to make. Keep in mind that typing “they kissed for a long time”…that’s six words, it takes half a second to read, so that’s a short kiss! If you want a long kiss, you need long sentences that make the reader linger.

So maybe to start off, pick three things on the list to describe in your first kiss. Don’t try to do it all- that would be too much for even the most epic kiss. Just pick what’s most important to this particular scene, to these particular characters, and describe those parts along with the lips, and you’ve got yourself an awesome, emotional kiss. <3
